The Dawlish project was undertaken to stabilise the sea cliffs. The 90m high cliffs have a history of landslips and rockfalls resulting in extensive works to protect the main coastal railway line below.
Can Geotechnical
CAN Geotechnical were contracted to install over 2600 Soil Nails into marls and breccia using Weldgrip's 25mm Gripforce ® GRP Soil Nails in lengths of up to 10m without the use of couplers.

The Soil Nails were installed with grout and were chosen for their long-term corrosion resistance, coupled with their ease of handling on this steeply inclined cliff. The Gripforce ® Soil Nails are covered by a BBA certificate No. 01/R123, this details the design criteria for up to 120 years design life. For retaining the mesh 2.0m Gripforce ® GRP Rock Bolts were used.

Erosion protection and containment was provided by mesh with a geotextile. All faces were then hydraseeded to re-establish vegetation cover. This project required running of 7 face-mounted drill rigs simultaneously, moving across very difficult steep terrain above the live railway. Despite challenges posed by this, together with working through the difficult winter months on an exposed sea cliff, CAN succeeded in completing the contract on budget and 8 weeks early.
